Work & progress of Swacch Devalaya

Started Swacch at sathsanghs in public places in Nov. 2006 (on seeing a mess of footwear) and later at temples in 2009

Expanded swacch devalaya, launching in social media and multiple temples in June 2014 and Nate became a living example of Mahatma Gandhi’s words “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

Swacch Devalaya is supported and hailed by devotees, temple management, the priests and several organizations as “noble” work. Nate is a familiar figure at various temples and events in Atlanta wearing a Swacch devalaya vest.

Nate visits near-by temples regularly at peak hours and temples far away for festivals. Nate also visits various social events in the community to network and promote awareness to discipline.

In the process he has met with several leaders – Indian Ambassador Hon. Arun Singh in 2016, the Consul General Hon. Nagesh Singh (2015 to 2018) – who in his
farewell address praised the work of Swacch Devalaya, Consul General Dr. Swathi Kulkarni (2018 to date), Dr. Subramaniam Swami, Sri Vikas Swarup (author of Slum dog millionaire), Swami Tejomayananda ji former head of Chinmaya Mission.

  • Various temples & organizations have honored the work of Swacch Devalaya – North America Shirdi Sai Temple Of Atlanta, Sri Mahalakshmi temple of Atlanta, Ambhaji shakti Mandir near Atlanta, Shiv Mandir, Sanatan Mandir, Maharashtra Mandal of Atlanta, Bengali Association, Sewa-International Atlanta, Indian American Cultural Association etc.
  • Nate attends events like garba (attended by about 5000 people) and Ganesh utsav to maintain swacch, Beauty pageants, as also events organized by various regional associations to promote awareness, walking around wearing his swacch vest and distributing the flier to many.
  • Nate is blessed by his guru Swamini Svatmavidyananda, (disciple of Pujya Swami Dayanand Saraswati) for promoting Swacch Devalaya. Swamini has known Nate from 2006 when he started the movement.
  • The movement to promote self-discipline and self-esteem is gaining momentum with organic change and awareness among children too for 5S (sort, straighten, shine, standardize, sustain) which is ingrained in the Japanese and western culture and corporate world, particularly manufacturing.

Nate believes in “Just Do it” (karmani eva adhikaraste, maa phaleshu kadachana ) and “Leaving the lights on for all. He opens the heavy doors for devotees at the temples to open his heart to one and all. He says he has many failings to overcome and he has a long way to go towards evolving. When asked about his spiritual sadhanas he said I don’t want to just keep dribbling the basket-ball, I want to share and pass the ball to play in God’s team.
